FAQs: HOW DOES TEETH WHITENING WORK?

Discolorations can be the result of many organic and inorganic factors, including staining foods and drinks (coffee, tea, sodas, red wines, red sauces, etc.,), lifestyle choices (smoking), or exposure to certain medications. Initially, a layer may form (pellicle film) over the enamel layer. If the pellicle layer sits over a long period of time, then the stains will get deeper into the enamel, being that the enamel is porous. For these types of stains and for stains caused by medications, whitening treatments such as those provided by GloboDent are needed to break apart the staining compounds. A peroxide-based gel is used to break apart these organic and inorganic caused stains. In some cases, they may be used alongside a whitening light to accelerate the process, while there are also other home solutions, such as tray whitening and charcoal whitening. HOW WHITE CAN MY TEETH GET?
Typically, shade improvements can range anywhere from three to eight shade improvements, depending on the whitening method being used (Dental vs. Retail). In some cases, more significant results can be seen if the initial color shade is dark and caused by stains caused by tobacco or staining food or drinks. In other cases, some stains can be more challenging to treat, as they may have been caused due to medication or are stains developed over a long time. At the same time, there will be some cases where only minor shade improvements may occur. This typically will happen with clients who may already have a whiter shade of tooth, or their natural tooth color is of a darker shade. Main point of focus when it comes to whitening results, is that teeth whitening will help your teeth get as close to their natural tooth color, as possible.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I WHITEN MY TEETH?
Much depends on the type of whitening that is being used. If whitening toothpastes are being used, then this can be used as daily treatments for whitening results and maintenance. For over the counter whitening and more advanced whitening procedures, then maintenance can be completed on a quartely basis. If a professional whitening session is being completed, these results will last around a year, much depending on the eating/drinking habits of staining foods and drinks. One must keep in mind that as teeth whitening will help your teeth get as close to their natural tooth color, completing numerous whitening sessions in a short period of time won’t help get past that natural tooth color. Periodic touch-ups anywhere of 3 to 6 months would be considered standard.
HOW LONG WILL THE WHITENING RESULTS LAST?
Please keep in mind that teeth whitening is NOT a permanent result. Results can last anywhere from at least three months, up to 1 year or 2. How long your results last depends on your color food/drink intake and how often you maintain your results with maintenance products. For maximum results, it is recommended to avoid. colored food/drinks and tobacco use for 2 days following the procedure and to minimize the intake of colored food/drinks and minimize tobacco use for longer lasting results. Note that directly following a whitening procedure, a color rebound may occur. Color rebounds occur when teeth are whitened beyond their natural tooth color and appear whiter due to dehydration of the teeth. As the teeth hydrates, the teeth will regain their solid white color, resulting in your post procedure whitening shade.
WHY IN SOME CASES DOES ONE EXPERIENCE SENSITIVITY AFTER A WHITENING SESSION?
A few different factors can be related to causing teeth sensitivity. Being that most teeth whitening procedures use hydrogen peroxide as their main ingredient for whitening, the strength and percentage of the gel, along with the time of the procedure tend to be the most important factors to sensitivity. When looking for a whitening procedure, look for treatments that use specially formulated gels with procedures that don’t expose your teeth for a considerably long period of time. GloboDent products uses such high quallity and specially formulated gels and have designed their procedures to be short and effective, providing maximum results. Other factors that contribute to sensitivity, includes acidic diets as they enlarge dentinal tubules, and cracks on teeth, as the peroxide is able to enter the pulp tissue through these means, causing sensitivity (zingers). If continued sensitivity occurs, consult your dentist, as there may be some preexisting conditions.
HOW CAN ONE AVOID POST-TREATMENT SENSITIVITY?
Some sensitivity may also occur due to dehydration of the teeth. Simply drinking room temperature water, will help with some sensitivity issues. Clients who are prone to having sensitive teeth may choose to take an over the counter analgesic (Tylenol or Ibuprofen) before the procedure. Most GloboDent products/procedures include the GloboDent Remineralizing Gel, which is designed to strenghten and remineralize dental enamel while decreasing risks of teeth sensitivity. Using the remineralizing gel for 3 to 5 minutes after the procedure will help with any risk of sensitivity. GloboDent also offers toothpastes that remineralize teeth while also continues to provide whitening and maintenance to your results.
WHO SHOULD NOT COMPLETE A WHITENING SESSION?
Pregnant or Lactating women, and children under the age of 16 are not recommended to undergo whitening procedures. Also, anyone allergic to peroxides of glycols should not undergo the whitening procedure
AFTER WHITENING, WHITE SPOTS MAY APPEAR ON THE TEETH. WHAT ARE THESE?
These spots may be hypocalcification spots which are signs of low calcium. Other white spots may be a cause of fluorosis, caused by too much fluoride intake at a young age. These white spots may appear to be more noticeable after whitening due to dehydration of the teeth. Over the next few days after whitening, as the teeth rehydrates, these spots will fade. Keep in mind that these spots are normal and were not caused by the whitening procedure.
WILL WHITENING DAMAGE OR WHITEN MY CAPS, BONDED TEETH, PORCELAIN AND DENTAL IMPLANTS?
Although GloboDent products will NOT damage any caps, bonded teeth, porcelain and dental implants, our GloboDent gel will whiten/clean them to the original color they were made when initially inserted.
